How to stop subvocalization and read faster

Subvocalization — saying words silently in your head — limits most readers to 200-250 words per minute. The good news: it's a habit, and habits can be retrained.

Step 1: Use pacing. Move your finger or a pen slightly faster than your comfortable speed. Your eyes follow movement naturally, forcing your brain to keep up.

Step 2: Practice with RSVP apps like Falcon Text Reading, which display one word at a time at a speed you control. Start at 300 wpm and increase weekly.

Step 3: Focus on meaning chunks instead of words. Train your peripheral vision to capture 3-4 words per fixation. With 15 minutes daily, most people double their speed in two weeks.
